Instead of
corporate enclosure of knowledge
do we want commercialize access to knowledge?
We need
open information exchange, minimal concern over intellectual
property control, no requirements for individuals to monetize
knowledge production
I need to get a detailed break down of the costs
Immutible published object http://craigmod.com/journal/post_artifact/
To sum up, the advent of the Internet should have greatly
reduced the monetary value that can be extracted from academic
content. Publishers who have depended on extracting this value
face a crisis. The crisis is being delayed only by Universities
and research funders. They have the power in their hands to
insist on alternative models for access to the results of
research, such as open access and self-archiving, but have in
most cases been reluctant to do so. My suspicion is that the
decision-makers in this area also tend to be on editorial
boards of major journals, and thus generously treated by the
big publishers.
